May 24, 2025Psychosocial support sessions are a fundamental need for Syrian refugees in refugee settings. The forced experience of
displacement leaves clear psychological scars. Anxiety is high. Feelings of insecurity are prevalent. The loss of daily
routines affects psychological well-being. PSS sessions provide a safe space. They allow for expression. They help in
understanding emotions. They restore a sense of control over one’s life.
The importance of psychosocial support sessions
Psychosocial support for Syrian refugees is human-centered. It considers individual experiences, addresses the effects
of trauma, and promotes psychological stability. These sessions help regulate emotions, reduce stress, improve
decision-making abilities, and enhance self-worth. Having PSS sessions within the community rebuilds
trust—self-confidence and trust in others.
Psychological and social benefits
PSS sessions have a direct impact on the mental health of refugees. Results appear within
a short period.
1. Reduced levels of anxiety and stress
2. Enhancing communication skills
3. Strengthening family relationships
On a social level, psychosocial support for Syrian refugees contributes to their
integration into the host community. It helps them understand the laws, promotes acceptance of differences, reduces
isolation, and encourages community participation.
Children show improved behavior, adolescents develop problem-solving skills, and adults
regain their roles within the family.
Future benefit mechanisms
The benefits of PSS sessions don’t end when the session concludes. The impact is
long-lasting. Participants gain practical psychological tools—tools that help them cope with future stressors.
Coping skills become part of their daily lives. This is reflected in their work, their education, and their social
relationships.
